Successful NNP Convention 2017

Tuesday 28th March 2017: The New National Party has staged another successful Convention as it celebrates its 33rd year since the inception of the party in 1984.

The 2017 National Convention was held under the Theme:

“NNP: Building our Country and Uniting our People”

Over 400 enthusiastic and vibrant delegates and observers of the party converged at the St. Andrew Anglican Secondary School on Sunday for Convention 2017.

The business of the day consisted of reports from key organs of the party, as it ready’s itself for General Elections constitutionally due in 2018.  The party’s financial report along with reports on party organization took center stage as each constituency spoke of the work that has been done and which needs to be done in the short and medium term.

The election of officers saw all positions on the executive up for grabs with the following results:

The New National Party was joined by several observers from regional and international sisters parties with the Peoples Action Movement (PAM) of St Kitts, the New Democratic Party of St Vincent and the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom all sending representatives inclusive of the Leader of the Opposition in St. Vincent Dr. Godwin Friday and Mr. Jonel Powell Deputy Leader of the PAM out of St Kitts who both brought greetings to the NNP on its Convention.

There were also four (4) resolutions passed by the Convention of the New National Party regarding:

  • Support for Youth Development
  • Support for the Rural Economy
  • Support for the Religious Community
  • Support of Government’s Fiscal Programme

The feature address was delivered by Political Leader Dr. Keith Mitchell in which he called on all arms of the party to continue the organizational process as the NNP prepares for General Elections. He called on the delegates and Observers to remember those who have worked toward the development of the party from its inception including those who have now passed to the great beyond.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the issues surrounding GRENLEC and Constitutional Reform. A Massive Rally at the Telescope Playing Field followed the closed session of the Convention with speeches on Health, Social Services and Housing, The Economy, Agriculture, Youth, Current Affairs and a feature address by Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. Andrew Holness.
